What should you know about a plain chest X-ray?

A plain chest X-ray uses a small amount of ionising radiation to create pictures of structures in the chest. It may help a clinician look for changes linked with Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, Bronchiectasis or other causes of a persistent cough. The image is one part of an assessment; a clear result does not explain every symptom, and an unusual finding may need further testing.

Follow the imaging centre's instructions. Tell the radiographer if you might be pregnant, and remove jewellery or clothing that could obscure the chest image. You will usually need to stand or sit still and hold your breath briefly while images are taken. Do not wait for a routine scan if you have severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, fainting, new confusion, coughing blood, or sudden chest pain. Seek prompt review for worsening breathlessness, persistent fever or a cough that is not improving. If tuberculosis is a concern, ask whether Tuberculosis Screening or additional samples are needed; the scan alone cannot confirm every cause.
