Persistent cough after flu: what should you know?

A persistent cough after flu can reflect irritated airways, but worsening symptoms or breathing difficulty need medical assessment. Coughing can continue while airway lining settles, even after fever and body aches have improved.

After influenza, the cough may be dry or bring up mucus and can be triggered by talking, cold air, or activity. A lingering cough is not itself proof of another condition. Reflux, nasal drainage from allergic rhinitis, or asthma can also keep the cough going; each has different clues and treatment. Hoarseness may appear when repeated coughing irritates the voice box.

Rest, drink fluids, avoid cigarette smoke and strong fragrances, and use warm drinks if they soothe your throat. Note whether the cough is dry or productive, what triggers it, and whether it is improving. Arrange a GP Consultation if it persists, disrupts sleep, or returns after seeming to settle. A clinician may listen to your chest and review medicines, nasal symptoms, reflux, and asthma features.

Seek urgent help for severe or rapidly increasing breathlessness, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, or chest pain. Prompt medical advice is also appropriate for coughing blood, a new high fever, marked weakness, or symptoms that steadily worsen. People with significant lung disease, pregnancy, or a weakened immune system should seek advice earlier.

Ask what could be prolonging the cough, whether your breathing and chest need checking, and which warning signs should prompt urgent care. Share when the flu began, any medicines taken, smoking or vaping exposure, and whether mucus, wheeze, reflux, or nasal drainage is present.
