Short answer

When your period becomes irregular, track the change and consider pregnancy, hormonal shifts, medicines, and health conditions as possible explanations.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer

A cycle may come earlier or later than expected, last for a different length of time, or be missed. One unusual cycle can happen after stress, illness, travel, a change in exercise, or a change in weight. A repeated pattern deserves a clinical review, especially if you are trying to become pregnant or have other symptoms.

What an irregular period can mean

Irregular bleeding often reflects changes in ovulation, the release of an egg. Anovulation means ovulation does not happen in a cycle and can lead to unpredictable bleeding. Polycystic ovary syndrome may also affect ovulation and may occur with acne, increased facial or body hair, or difficulty becoming pregnant.

Perimenopause can make periods less predictable as the ovaries and hormones change before menopause. Premature ovarian insufficiency is another possible cause when ovarian function changes earlier than expected. Thyroid disorders, raised prolactin, some medicines, and hormonal contraception can also alter bleeding. These possibilities overlap, so the pattern and your wider health history matter.

What to do next

Record the first day of each bleed, how long it lasts, how heavy it seems, spotting between periods, pain, and any new symptoms. Note contraception, medicines, major stress, changes in weight or exercise, and whether pregnancy is possible. This gives a clinician a useful timeline.

If pregnancy is possible, take a home pregnancy test according to its instructions; repeat or arrange medical advice if the result is unclear and your period does not arrive. Book a routine appointment if irregularity continues, returns repeatedly, or comes with symptoms such as excess hair growth, nipple discharge, hot flushes, or trouble conceiving. Treatment depends on the cause and may include addressing an underlying condition or using a combined pill to regulate bleeding when suitable.

When to seek care urgently

Seek urgent medical help for very heavy bleeding, dizziness or fainting, severe or one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, or bleeding when pregnancy is possible. These symptoms can need prompt assessment, including to rule out pregnancy-related problems.

Arrange medical assessment for bleeding after menopause, bleeding after sex, persistent bleeding between periods, or a period pattern that changes alongside worsening pelvic pain, fever, or unusual discharge. Contact a clinician sooner if you feel weak or unwell, even if the amount of bleeding is difficult to judge.

Questions for your doctor

You could ask: What causes fit my cycle pattern and other symptoms? Do I need a pregnancy test or blood tests? Could my contraception or medicines be contributing? What treatment would protect my health and suit pregnancy plans? When should I return if the pattern continues?

Questions people ask

Can stress make a period irregular?

Yes. Significant stress can affect the hormones involved in ovulation, which may shift the timing of bleeding or lead to a missed period. If the change persists or keeps returning, arrange a clinical review.

Should I take a pregnancy test if my period is late?

If pregnancy is possible, a home test is a sensible first step. Follow the test instructions and seek medical advice if the result is unclear, symptoms are concerning, or bleeding and pain occur together.

Can irregular periods affect fertility?

They can make ovulation less predictable, which may make timing conception harder. A clinician can assess the pattern and discuss options based on your health and pregnancy plans.
