Perimenopause vulvar itching: what to know

Short answer
Perimenopause may contribute to vulvar itching through dryness and tissue changes, but infection, skin conditions and irritants can cause similar symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why itching happens
Changing oestrogen can leave vulval tissue drier, more delicate or easily irritated. Scented washes, wipes, pads, detergents, tight clothing and friction can add to the problem. Thrush, bacterial imbalance, sexually transmitted infections, eczema and other skin conditions may also cause itching, soreness, discharge or changes in the skin. The symptom alone cannot identify the cause, and scratching can create tiny breaks that increase irritation.
Gentle care
Wash the vulva with lukewarm water or a mild fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry. Avoid douching, perfumes, deodorants and harsh antiseptics. Choose breathable underwear, change out of damp clothing and use a plain emollient externally if a pharmacist or clinician says it is suitable. Do not use leftover steroid or antifungal creams without advice, because the wrong product can worsen some conditions or delay diagnosis.
When to seek care
Book an assessment for itching that persists, returns, affects sleep, causes broken skin or comes with discharge, odour, sores, pain or bleeding. Seek prompt care for a new blister, ulcer, rapidly changing skin, severe swelling or fever. A clinician may examine the skin and take a swab so treatment matches the cause.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the skin looks dry, inflamed or infected, which products are safe, whether local hormone treatment is appropriate, and when to return if symptoms continue.

Questions people ask
Can perimenopause cause vulvar itching?
It may contribute through dryness and tissue sensitivity, but infections, irritants and skin conditions can look similar.
Should I treat itching as thrush?
Not automatically. A clinician or pharmacist can help distinguish thrush from dryness, dermatitis and other causes before treatment.
