What should you know about pediatric influenza?

Short answer
Pediatric influenza is a contagious viral illness that can cause fever, cough, tiredness and sudden general unwellness in children.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Sudden respiratory illness with systemic symptoms.
- Home priorities
- Fluids, rest and reducing spread.
- Serious concern
- Breathing difficulty or reduced responsiveness.
How flu may appear
Children may develop fever, chills, headache, cough, sore muscles, fatigue, reduced appetite or a runny nose. Younger children can mainly seem irritable, sleepy or unwilling to drink. Symptoms can overlap with other infections, so appearance and examination matter more than one symptom. Flu can sometimes affect the lungs, and Pneumonia is a serious complication that needs medical attention.
Supporting recovery
Offer frequent fluids and rest, and keep the child home while they are feverish or too unwell for normal activities. Use medicines only as advised for the child’s age and health; never give aspirin to a child unless a clinician specifically directs it. Reduce spread with handwashing, ventilation and avoiding close contact with vulnerable people. Contact a clinician early if the child is very young or has a long-term condition.
When to seek care
Get emergency help for difficult or rapid breathing, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, a seizure, confusion, unusual difficulty waking, or chest pain. Seek prompt medical advice if fever returns after improving, the child cannot keep fluids down, becomes markedly less responsive or has worsening cough. Trust a clear change from the child’s usual behaviour.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether testing or antiviral treatment is appropriate, how to manage fluids and fever, when school can resume, and which symptoms should trigger reassessment.
