Short answer

PCV chemotherapy combines procarbazine, lomustine, and vincristine, with timing and monitoring tailored to the cancer and the person receiving it.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What PCV contains

PCV stands for procarbazine, lomustine, and vincristine. These medicines affect dividing cells in different ways. Lomustine and procarbazine are taken by mouth in a prescribed schedule, while vincristine is given through a vein by the oncology team. The exact plan varies with the cancer, previous treatment, blood counts, organ function, and treatment goals.

PCV may be discussed for some brain tumours and other cancers in selected circumstances. It is not suitable for every person or every tumour. The team may use blood tests and symptom checks before treatment and during follow-up because effects can be delayed, especially changes in blood counts.

Preparing for treatment

Use the written schedule supplied by the oncology team and never take an extra dose after vomiting or a missed dose without instructions. Check before starting any new medicine, supplement, or vaccine. Procarbazine may require food and drink restrictions, and alcohol or certain medicines may be unsafe; follow the instructions from your treatment unit rather than general internet advice.

Report numbness, tingling, constipation, mouth soreness, unusual bruising, fever, or worsening tiredness. Keep a record of tablets, symptoms, temperature checks if advised, and appointments. PCV may be used in care for conditions such as [Brain Tumour](/conditions/brain-tumour/) when a specialist considers it appropriate.

When to seek care

Call the oncology team urgently for fever or chills, feeling suddenly very unwell, unexplained bleeding, severe vomiting, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek emergency help for breathing difficulty, collapse, confusion, or a severe allergic reaction. Contact the team quickly for new weakness, worsening constipation, or numbness because vincristine-related nerve effects may need prompt review.

Questions for your doctor

Why is PCV suitable for my cancer? Which days will I take each medicine? When should I have blood tests? Which foods, drinks, medicines, or supplements should I avoid? Who should I call at night or at weekends if I develop a fever or cannot take a dose?

Questions people ask

Is PCV chemotherapy given entirely by infusion?

No. The regimen includes oral medicines and intravenous vincristine, according to the prescribed schedule.

What should I do if I develop a fever during PCV?

Follow your oncology unit's emergency instructions and seek urgent advice because infection can become serious when blood counts fall.
