This virus infects the airways and may produce a runny nose, sore throat, cough, chills, headache and a general feeling of being unwell. Illness can stay in the upper airways, but infants, older adults and people with lung disease may become more unwell if infection reaches the lower airways. A positive test identifies the virus; it does not by itself show how severe the illness will be or rule out another infection.

Rest, drink fluids and use simple measures that soothe your throat and nose. Stay home while you feel unwell, improve ventilation and cover coughs to reduce spread. A pharmacist or clinician can advise on age-appropriate fever or pain relief. Antibiotics do not treat a virus, although a clinician may prescribe treatment if a separate bacterial complication is suspected. Avoid smoke and monitor breathing, especially in a young child.

Get urgent help for struggling or unusually fast breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, inability to drink or signs of dehydration. Contact a clinician if fever persists, symptoms worsen after initial improvement, chest pain develops or a cough becomes markedly more difficult. Babies, frail adults and people with significant lung or immune problems may need earlier advice.

Ask whether testing is needed, how to manage fever and cough, and what breathing changes require urgent review. If a child is ill, ask how to judge fluid intake and whether their existing inhalers or other medicines should be continued.
