Short answer

Optical rosacea describes rosacea-related visible changes around the eyes or face, and redness, burning or sensitivity should be assessed in context.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How rosacea can appear

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that commonly affects the central face. It may cause flushing that lingers, persistent redness, visible small blood vessels, burning or stinging, sensitive skin, and acne-like pimples. Eye involvement can bring gritty, dry or irritated eyes and inflamed eyelid edges. A person with rosacea may notice symptoms after heat, sunlight, hot drinks, alcohol, spicy food, stress or irritating skincare, although triggers vary.

Rosacea can resemble acne, contact irritation or other facial conditions. A clinician uses the pattern, history and examination to distinguish them. Symptoms can wax and wane, so a flare-free appointment does not erase the history of repeated episodes.

Steps that may help

Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser and broad-spectrum sun protection that your skin tolerates. Introduce one new product at a time and keep a brief trigger diary. Avoid scrubbing, very hot water and fragranced products if they sting. Prescribed options may include azelaic acid treatment for selected bumps and redness. Persistent visible vessels may be discussed with a pulsed dye laser treatment or IPL photofacial; these procedures require an individual skin assessment.

Do not apply steroid creams to the face unless a clinician has specifically advised it, because unsuitable use can worsen some facial rashes.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if facial redness persists, pimples recur, burning limits skincare, or symptoms are affecting confidence or daily activities. Seek urgent eye care for marked eye pain, light sensitivity, sudden blurred vision, or a feeling that something is stuck in the eye. Eye symptoms need attention because surface irritation and eyelid inflammation can affect comfort and vision.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which rosacea pattern you have, whether your eyes are involved, which ingredients to avoid, how long to trial a prescribed treatment, and whether laser or light treatment suits your skin tone and visible vessels. Ask what improvement to monitor and when to return.

Questions people ask

Is rosacea the same as acne?

No. Rosacea can cause acne-like pimples, but its flushing, persistent redness, burning and trigger pattern differ from typical acne.

Can rosacea affect the eyes?

Yes. Eye involvement may cause irritation, dryness or inflamed eyelid edges; pain or vision change needs urgent eye assessment.
