People may notice shimmering lights, zigzag lines, blind spots, flickering, or a spreading area of disturbed vision. The change can affect both eyes even when it seems stronger on one side. Head pain may follow, occur at the same time, or be absent. Light sensitivity, nausea, dizziness, or facial discomfort can accompany the episode. Stop driving and move to a quiet, dim place while the visual disturbance is present. A clinician can review the pattern and discuss an appropriate treatment plan rather than assuming every visual symptom is migraine.

Seek emergency care for sudden vision loss, weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, fainting, a new severe headache, or visual symptoms that persist or occur in only one eye. An eye that is painful and red also needs urgent review. Do not wait for a familiar migraine pattern if the episode is distinctly different.
