What should you know about norovirus pneumonia?

Norovirus commonly causes sudden nausea, vomiting, watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps and sometimes fever. Cough, chills, phlegm or breathlessness are not typical features of a stomach infection. If these symptoms occur together, a clinician may need to consider pneumonia, influenza, COVID-19, aspiration after vomiting, or more than one infection. Pneumonia can make breathing painful or difficult and may cause a cough that produces phlegm. The presence of a cough does not by itself show that norovirus has reached the lungs.

Take frequent small sips of oral rehydration fluid or water if vomiting has settled, and rest. Wash hands with soap and water after using the toilet and before preparing food; alcohol hand gel is not a reliable substitute for norovirus control. Avoid preparing food for other people while unwell. Arrange prompt medical advice for a new cough with fever, chest discomfort, or shortness of breath, especially after repeated vomiting. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels and decide whether further tests are needed. Antibiotics do not treat norovirus.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. Urgent assessment is also needed if you are passing very little urine, becoming unusually drowsy, or worsening quickly. These signs can reflect serious dehydration, low oxygen, or sepsis and should not be explained away as a routine stomach bug.
