What should you know about normal chest X-ray radiology?

The radiologist may have found that the lungs, heart outline, airways, bones and visible soft tissues look within expected limits. A report can also say there is no focal opacity, fluid around the lungs or collapsed lung. These findings make some problems less likely, yet an X-ray is a limited snapshot. It may not show early infection, asthma, irritation of the airways, or causes outside the chest.

Your result should be read alongside the reason for the test and how you feel. A normal image does not mean that ongoing cough, breathlessness or pain has no cause.

Read the wording of the report with the clinician who ordered it. Ask whether your symptoms need another examination, breathing tests, blood tests or a different scan. Keep a note of when symptoms occur, what brings them on, and whether fever, wheeze or phlegm is present. Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, crushing chest pressure, or coughing up more than a small streak of blood. A high fever with breathing difficulty also needs prompt assessment. Do not wait for a previously normal X-ray to settle new or worsening symptoms.
