Non-atopic asthma

Asthma symptoms happen when the airways become narrowed and sensitive. In non-atopic asthma, tests may not show the allergic pattern seen with conditions such as Allergic Rhinitis or House Dust Mite Allergy. Triggers can include respiratory infections, smoke, strong scents, cold air, exercise, or stress. Cough, wheezing, chest tightness, and breathlessness may come and go. Having no obvious allergy does not make symptoms less real, and it does not rule out other causes of breathing difficulty.

Use your prescribed reliever and preventer inhalers exactly as directed, and keep a written action plan if your clinician provides one. Notice patterns around exercise, fumes, viral illnesses, or weather, but do not avoid activity without guidance. Arrange a review if symptoms disturb sleep, limit normal activity, or require reliever treatment more often than planned. A nebuliser treatment may be used in some acute settings, but it is not a substitute for an agreed asthma plan.

Seek emergency help if breathing is severely difficult, speech is limited by breathlessness, lips look blue or grey, you become unusually drowsy, or your reliever is not helping as your plan advises. Sit upright and follow your action plan while help is arranged.

How was an allergic cause assessed? Which triggers should I watch for? When should I use each inhaler? Could my cough or wheeze have another cause, and when should I have my treatment reviewed?
