Nightshade allergy list: what to know

Short answer

Nightshade foods include tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, and peppers, but symptoms after eating them need assessment before excluding a whole food group.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is on a nightshade list

Nightshades are plants in the Solanaceae family. Common edible examples include tomatoes, white potatoes, aubergines, and peppers such as bell peppers and chilli peppers. Paprika and chilli powder are made from peppers, so check mixed ingredients as well. Sweet potatoes are not nightshades.

A food allergy involves an immune response and may cause hives, swelling, wheezing, vomiting, or mouth and throat symptoms soon after eating. Food intolerance can cause digestive discomfort without the same immune mechanism. Allergic rhinitis, asthma, pet allergy, or dust-mite allergy do not prove that a nightshade food is responsible.

How to investigate a suspected reaction

Write down the exact food, amount, preparation, timing, symptoms, and any exercise or medicine around the meal. Do not remove tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines, and peppers together without professional guidance, because broad restriction can make a balanced diet harder. A clinician may consider a supervised elimination and reintroduction plan or allergy testing; tests must be interpreted alongside the reaction history.

Read Food Allergy for background and ask about ingredients in sauces, spice blends, and prepared foods. Keep any prescribed emergency medicine available and follow your personal action plan.

When to seek care

Call emergency services immediately for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, collapse, or symptoms affecting more than one body system after eating. These can be features of anaphylaxis. Arrange a non-urgent review for repeated reactions, unexplained hives, or persistent digestive symptoms.

Questions for your doctor

Does my reaction sound like food allergy, intolerance, or another problem? Which food should I avoid while I am assessed? Do I need allergy testing or a supervised food challenge? What emergency plan should I follow if symptoms return?

Questions people ask

Are nightshades a recognised allergy category?

A person can be allergic to an individual food such as tomato or potato, but a reaction to one nightshade does not automatically mean reactions to all nightshades.

Can nightshades cause joint pain in everyone?

There is no reliable basis for assuming that nightshade foods cause the same symptom in everyone; discuss a repeatable pattern with a clinician before restricting foods.
