What should you know about NHSN pneumonia?

Short answer
Pneumonia is a lung infection that can cause cough, fever, chest discomfort, and breathing difficulty, so assessment matters.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main problem
- Inflammation and fluid in the lung air sacs
- Possible symptoms
- Cough, fever, chills, phlegm, tiredness, or breathlessness
What pneumonia means
In pneumonia, infection causes inflammation and fluid or mucus in the air sacs of the lungs. Bacteria, viruses, and less commonly fungi can be involved. A cough may be dry or produce phlegm; chills and fever can occur, and tiredness may be marked. A clinician may listen to your chest, check oxygen levels, and decide whether tests such as a chest X-ray are useful. Pneumonia can follow influenza or COVID-19, but not every cough after a cold is pneumonia.
What you can do
Rest, drink fluids if you can, and follow the treatment plan provided after assessment. Antibiotics help some bacterial infections but do not treat viral pneumonia, so do not use leftover medicine or share prescriptions. Take any prescribed course exactly as directed. Avoid smoking and keep indoor air comfortable. Wash hands, cover coughs, and limit close contact while fever or significant respiratory symptoms continue. A follow-up review may be needed if symptoms are not settling.
When to seek care
Arrange prompt medical advice for worsening breathlessness, chest pain, persistent fever, confusion, marked weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek emergency help if breathing is severely difficult, lips look blue or grey, or the person is difficult to wake. Older adults, babies, pregnant people, and those with heart, lung, or immune conditions may need earlier assessment because their symptoms can be less typical.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what is causing the infection, whether oxygen or imaging should be checked, which treatments are appropriate, and what change should trigger reassessment. You can also ask when normal activity is reasonable and how to reduce spread at home.

Questions people ask
Can pneumonia be caused by a virus?
Yes. Viruses including influenza and COVID-19 can cause pneumonia, and treatment depends on the suspected cause.
Does every cough need antibiotics?
No. Antibiotics treat selected bacterial infections, not viral coughs, so a clinician should guide treatment.
