Next Generation Sequencing Data Analysis: What to Know

After sequencing, the laboratory first checks whether the sample and generated data are adequate. It then aligns sequence fragments with a reference, looks for changes such as substitutions or missing sections, and removes technical noise. Findings are reviewed against the purpose of the test: a tumour panel, inherited-condition assessment, carrier screen, or another defined question.

A report may classify findings as relevant, uncertain, or not currently meaningful. In cancer care, analysis can describe changes in tumour DNA that may support a conversation about targeted treatment or further testing. In inherited testing, a result may prompt family counselling or confirmation. The analysis is only one part of care; pathology, examination, imaging, and medical history remain essential.

Ask what the test included and whether the sample was tumour tissue, blood, or another material. Ask how coverage and sample quality affected interpretation, whether a finding needs confirmation, and whether the report contains inherited information. Keep the full report for future clinicians, and ask who will explain changes if a laboratory updates its interpretation.

Arrange follow-up if your report recommends confirmation, referral to genetics, or a treatment review. Contact the ordering service when the report conflicts with a previous result so the samples and test methods can be compared. Seek emergency care for severe symptoms such as sudden weakness, serious breathing difficulty, uncontrolled bleeding, or new confusion rather than waiting for data analysis.
