What should you know about neonatal chest X-ray?

The image may help a clinical team look for air or fluid around the lungs, changes linked with infection, and the position or size of structures in the chest. It can also help assess breathing difficulty after birth or follow a concern already identified during examination. An X-ray does not provide a complete diagnosis on its own; clinicians interpret it alongside the baby’s symptoms, examination and other tests.

Tell the team about any relevant pregnancy, birth or newborn history. Staff usually position the baby carefully and keep the exposure area limited. The examination itself is brief, and a parent may be given instructions about where to stand while the image is taken. Do not move the baby or remove monitoring equipment unless the clinical team asks you to. Ask when the result will be discussed and what other observations are being followed.

Seek urgent medical care if a newborn has difficult or rapidly worsening breathing, pauses in breathing, blue or grey lips or skin, marked sleepiness, poor feeding, or fewer wet nappies than expected. These signs need prompt assessment regardless of whether an X-ray has been arranged. If the baby is already in a hospital, alert the bedside team immediately.
