Nausea without vomiting: what it may mean

Short answer
Nausea without vomiting can still be caused by infection, migraine, medicines, digestive irritation, stress or pregnancy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind the feeling
Nausea is the sensation that you may be sick, and vomiting does not have to follow. It may accompany a stomach infection, Food Poisoning, constipation, reflux, a migraine, motion sensitivity, anxiety, pregnancy or a new medicine. Pain in the upper abdomen can occur with Gallstones or Pancreatitis, while severe headache, neck stiffness or sensitivity to light needs urgent attention because Meningitis is one possible cause.
Notice when it began, what you ate, whether movement or smells trigger it, and whether you have pain, fever, diarrhoea, headache or dizziness. This pattern is more useful than nausea alone for deciding what needs checking.
What you can try
Take small sips of water and choose bland, smaller meals. Avoid lying flat soon after eating, strong smells, alcohol and foods that clearly trigger symptoms. Fresh air, quiet rest and slow breathing may help if stress or sensory triggers are involved.
Review recent medicines with a pharmacist rather than stopping a prescribed treatment yourself. If diarrhoea develops, oral rehydration fluids may help replace lost water and salts. Keep a short symptom diary if nausea returns, including meals, medicines, pain and menstrual or pregnancy information when relevant.
When to seek medical care
Seek emergency help for severe or worsening abdominal pain, vomit containing blood, black stools, fainting, confusion, a stiff neck, a sudden severe headache, chest pain or trouble breathing. Prompt assessment is needed if you cannot keep fluids down, urinate very little, or become unusually sleepy.
Arrange a clinician review if nausea persists, keeps returning, causes weight loss or follows a new medicine. Pregnancy with persistent nausea, diabetes with possible low blood sugar, or significant long-term illness also warrants tailored advice.
