What should you know about national mri scan?

During an MRI, you lie on a table that moves into a tunnel-shaped scanner. The machine makes loud knocking sounds, and you may be given headphones or ear protection. Staying still helps produce clear images. Some scans use contrast material to make particular tissues easier to see.

Before the scan, tell the team about metal implants, a pacemaker, clips, fragments, pregnancy, kidney problems, allergies and anxiety in enclosed spaces. The team will explain whether you can eat, drink or take usual medicines. An MRI can show anatomy clearly, but an image alone does not always establish the cause of a finding.

Follow the appointment instructions and wear clothing without metal when advised. Remove jewellery, watches, cards and electronic items before entering the scanner area. Ask whether contrast is planned and how results will be shared. A radiologist interprets the images and sends a report to the clinician who requested the scan.

An MRI may help assess areas such as the brain, spine, joints or organs. It is different from a [CT scan](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/mri-scan/) only in the broad sense that each test uses a different imaging method; your clinician chooses according to the clinical question.

An MRI appointment is not a substitute for urgent care. Seek immediate help for sudden weakness, trouble speaking, a seizure, severe new headache, sudden vision loss or loss of consciousness. Tell the imaging team promptly about breathing difficulty, severe pain or a possible reaction after contrast.

What area is being scanned and what question should it answer? Will contrast be used? Do my implants or kidney history require a special plan? When and how will I receive the report? What happens if the scan shows an area that needs a biopsy or another test?
