What should you know about multiple ectopic pregnancies?

An ectopic pregnancy develops outside the main cavity of the uterus, most often in a fallopian tube. It cannot develop normally there. Having had one ectopic pregnancy raises concern for recurrence, so a new positive test should prompt contact with your maternity or gynaecology team rather than waiting for routine care.

Previous tube damage, pelvic surgery, infection such as Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, or fertility treatment may be relevant, but a recurrence can also happen without an obvious risk factor. Blood tests show how pregnancy hormone levels change; a Transvaginal Ultrasound helps locate the pregnancy when the timing is appropriate.

Before trying to conceive, ask for a review of your previous records, treatment and remaining tube health. Once pregnant, report the positive test promptly and follow the schedule for hormone testing and an early scan. The available treatments depend on the pregnancy location, hormone pattern, symptoms and scan findings; they may include medicine or surgery.

If surgery has been discussed, ask how it may affect future fertility and what recovery involves. A Salpingectomy removes a fallopian tube and is one possible operation in selected circumstances. Emotional support matters too: grief, fear and uncertainty can continue after physical recovery.

Go to emergency care immediately for sudden or severe abdominal or Pelvic Pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, weakness, heavy bleeding, or dizziness with a positive pregnancy test. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint. A rupture can cause internal bleeding and needs urgent treatment.
