What should you know about mRNA immunotherapy?

Messenger RNA, or mRNA, carries instructions that cells can read for a limited time. In an immunotherapy approach, those instructions may guide the body to make a target or signal that helps immune cells identify cancer-related features. The aim is to support an immune response rather than directly destroy tumour cells with a chemical drug.

The approach is still highly individual. The target, cancer type, stage, previous treatment and test results all affect whether it is considered. It is not the same as a routine vaccine, and it does not replace the need for diagnosis, staging or a personalised treatment plan.

Ask the oncology team whether an mRNA approach is available for your cancer and whether it is part of standard care or a clinical trial. Take a list of medicines, allergies and previous treatments to the appointment. Ask which tests identify a suitable tumour target and how response would be monitored.

Possible immune treatments can cause inflammation in organs such as the skin, bowel, lungs, liver or thyroid. Report new symptoms promptly, even if they seem mild, and do not start supplements or stop prescribed medicines without checking with the treating team.

Contact your cancer team promptly for a new widespread rash, persistent diarrhoea, severe abdominal pain, yellowing of the eyes, unusual breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, marked weakness or a high fever. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, sudden weakness or symptoms that are rapidly worsening.
