What should you know about an MRI uterus scan?

MRI can show the size, position, and structure of the uterus, cervix, ovaries, and nearby tissues. It may help assess fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, bleeding, a mass, or the local extent of a known cancer. The images do not automatically identify the cause of every finding, and an MRI cannot by itself confirm that a mass is cancer. A radiologist combines the pictures with your symptoms, examination, and previous tests.

Tell the imaging team if you might be pregnant, have metal or electronic implants, kidney problems, allergies, or difficulty staying still in an enclosed space. Follow the centre's instructions about eating, drinking, clothing, and medicines. You may receive contrast through a vein when it could improve tissue detail. During the scan, lie still while the table moves through the scanner; loud sounds are expected, and staff can communicate with you. Ask whether a full bladder or another preparation is needed for your specific examination.

Seek urgent medical help for heavy vaginal bleeding with dizziness or fainting, severe or rapidly worsening pelvic pain, fever with feeling very unwell, or possible pregnancy with significant pain or bleeding. If you develop breathing difficulty, facial swelling, or widespread hives after contrast, treat it as an emergency. Contact the ordering clinician if symptoms continue while you await the report.

What question is this MRI intended to answer? Will contrast be used, and why? Do I need a biopsy or another examination after the scan? When will the report be available, and who will explain it? If an abnormality is found, what features determine whether monitoring, further testing, or treatment is appropriate?
