What should you know about a Philips MRI scan?

Philips is a manufacturer of MRI systems. The brand name alone does not describe the body area, magnetic strength, software, coil or sequence used for your appointment. The radiology team selects a protocol based on the clinical question and may use contrast when it adds useful information.

MRI images are reviewed by a radiologist, who considers them with your symptoms, examination and other results. An MRI can identify an area that needs follow-up, but an image is not automatically a cancer diagnosis. A biopsy may be discussed when tissue confirmation is required.

Ask the centre which body area will be scanned and whether contrast, fasting or breath-holding is planned. Tell staff about pacemakers and other implants, metal fragments, hearing devices, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, kidney disease and past contrast reactions. Remove jewellery, watches, cards and other metal objects as instructed.

During the scan, you will need to keep still while the system makes loud sounds. Ear protection and a call button are provided in many units. Tell the team if you have pain, anxiety or difficulty lying in the required position so adjustments can be considered.

Report severe discomfort, overheating, dizziness or breathing difficulty during the scan. After contrast, seek urgent help for facial swelling, widespread rash, breathing problems or fainting. Sudden weakness, a new seizure or a severe headache also needs emergency assessment.
