A centre should ask about metal implants and other safety concerns before the appointment. It should also explain how images will reach the referring clinician and how you will receive the report. Location alone does not determine what an MRI result means; the clinical context matters.

Confirm that the centre performs the specific examination requested and can accommodate your height, weight, mobility needs, or anxiety in enclosed spaces. Share details of implanted devices, metal fragments, kidney problems, allergies, and pregnancy. Ask about arrival time, clothing, food or drink instructions, contrast, accessibility, and the process for sending images and reports to your doctor. Bring the referral information and previous relevant scans if requested.

Do not delay urgent assessment while searching for an imaging location if you have sudden weakness, new difficulty speaking, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe injury pain, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Emergency services may arrange the appropriate imaging pathway.

Ask whether the centre can perform the exact scan, whether contrast is likely, who will report it, when the result will be sent, and whether your implanted device has been cleared for that scanner.
