What can an MRI scan discover?

MRI uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of soft tissues, organs, joints and the brain. It may show a mass, inflammation, swelling, bleeding, scarring or a change in the shape of a structure. Some findings are harmless variations or relate to an old injury. The image alone does not establish cancer or explain every symptom.

A radiologist describes the images in a report. The clinician who requested the scan combines that report with your symptoms, examination and earlier results. A scan may suggest a next step, such as another image, blood test or biopsy, but it cannot replace tissue analysis when a diagnosis depends on cells.

Request an appointment to discuss the report in context, especially if the scan was arranged after an unexpected symptom. Bring a list of medicines, previous scans and relevant medical history. Ask which finding needs attention, whether it is new, and whether comparison with older images is possible.

Follow the recommended pathway rather than interpreting isolated phrases online. Depending on the body area, your clinician may arrange observation, repeat imaging or a tissue sample. Contact the service that ordered the scan promptly if the report advises urgent review or if symptoms are worsening. Seek emergency help for new weakness on one side, trouble speaking, a seizure, severe sudden headache, confusion, fainting or difficulty breathing. These symptoms require assessment regardless of whether an MRI has been performed.
