What should you know about MRI scan details?

Before scanning, staff check for implants, metal fragments, medical conditions, and other factors that affect safety. You then lie on a table while the requested body area is positioned in the scanner. The machine records several sequences, with pauses between them, and clear images require you to keep still.

Contrast through a vein may be used when it helps separate tissues or clarify a finding. The radiologist reviews the images alongside the clinical question and prepares a report for the referring clinician. The scan image is not the same as a diagnosis; results need clinical context.

Follow written instructions about food, drink, medicines, and arrival time. Remove metal objects and tell staff about pregnancy, kidney disease, allergies, tattoos or patches containing metal, and previous surgery. Mention pain or anxiety early so positioning and communication can be planned. Ask when and how your results will be shared.

Contact the imaging service about a new rash, swelling, wheezing, or severe dizziness after contrast. Get emergency help for breathing difficulty, collapse, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Seek urgent medical assessment for new weakness, loss of bladder control, severe headache, or sudden confusion.

Ask what the scan is intended to clarify, whether contrast is planned, how your medicines should be handled, who will explain the report, and whether a biopsy or another test may follow.
