What should you know about MRI scan arm?

The scan may focus on the shoulder, upper arm, elbow, forearm, wrist, or hand. It can help assess pain, swelling, injury, restricted movement, or a finding that needs clearer soft-tissue imaging. The requested area is positioned carefully inside the scanner, and several image sequences may be taken while you remain still.

Contrast may be suggested when it could clarify inflammation, blood supply, scar tissue, or a mass. Tell the team about implanted devices, metal fragments, kidney problems, allergies, pregnancy, and prior operations before scanning.

Wear clothing without metal and remove watches, jewellery, cards, and removable medical devices as instructed. Follow any advice about food, drink, or medicines. During the examination, keep the arm in the requested position and use the call button if you need help. Ear protection reduces the effect of the scanner sounds.

Tell the imaging team immediately about breathing difficulty, widespread rash, facial swelling, or severe dizziness after contrast. Seek urgent care for a cold, pale, blue, or severely swollen limb, loss of feeling or movement, or pain that is rapidly worsening.

Ask which part of the arm will be scanned, whether contrast is needed, how to protect a painful joint during positioning, when results will be discussed, and whether further testing such as a biopsy could be relevant.
