What should you know about molecular allergy testing?

A standard allergy blood test may use an extract containing many proteins from a source such as a food, dust mite, pollen, or animal. Molecular testing separates that source into individual components. The pattern can help an allergy specialist judge whether sensitisation fits a genuine allergy, cross-reactivity, or a lower-risk response.

A positive IgE result shows sensitisation, not automatically a clinical allergy. Results must be matched with what happened after exposure, the amount involved, age, medical history, and examination. A negative result also does not explain every symptom or exclude every type of reaction.

Describe exact reactions, timing, preparation of the food, amount eaten, medicines taken, and whether symptoms involved the skin, gut, breathing, or circulation. Ask whether a blood sample is appropriate or whether skin testing, supervised challenge, or another assessment is needed.

Do not remove several foods or avoid pets, dust, or outdoor activities solely because a report lists sensitisation. A clinician can identify meaningful triggers and make a focused avoidance plan. If a serious reaction is possible, ask for a written emergency plan and training in its use.

Call emergency services for sudden breathing difficulty, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, collapse, or symptoms affecting more than one body system after exposure. These may indicate anaphylaxis and need immediate treatment. Arrange specialist review for recurrent reactions, unexplained asthma or rhinitis, or uncertainty about safe foods.

Ask which components were tested, what each finding means for your actual symptoms, and whether cross-reactivity could explain the pattern. Ask if you need an elimination plan, supervised food challenge, emergency medication, or review for asthma, allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, pet allergy, or house dust mite allergy.
