What should you know about modern MRI scanners?

Newer systems may have wider openings, faster image sequences, improved noise control, and clearer communication with the technologist. The exact experience varies by scanner and the body area being examined. You still need to lie very still while the table moves through the magnetic opening. The machine makes loud tapping or knocking sounds, so hearing protection is provided.

MRI can show soft tissues in detail and may help assess a brain tumour, organs, blood vessels, or treatment response. An MRI image is one part of clinical assessment. Depending on the finding, a clinician may recommend another test, such as a biopsy, before naming a diagnosis. A PSA test is a different type of investigation used in prostate assessment.

Complete the safety questionnaire carefully. Mention pacemakers, clips, pumps, cochlear implants, metal fragments, tattoos with metal pigment, pregnancy, and kidney problems if contrast is being considered. Remove jewellery, cards, phones, and other metal objects. Ask about the scanner opening, estimated appointment time, music, and whether a support person can remain nearby. Use the call button if you need to pause; the technologist can see and hear you.

Call the imaging centre before arrival if you are unsure whether an implant or metal fragment is safe. During the scan, report pain, distress, breathing trouble, or a sensation of overheating.
