Migraine hangover: what to know

How the structures involved in Migraine differ from normal

Short answer

A migraine hangover is the recovery phase after an attack, when symptoms can linger even after head pain eases.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Phase
Recovery symptoms can continue after the main head pain improves.
Safety
Do not drive while dizziness or poor concentration affects you.

Symptoms after the pain

After a migraine, some people feel drained, mentally slowed, dizzy, emotionally flat, or unusually sensitive to light and sound. Mild head discomfort, nausea, or difficulty concentrating may remain. This recovery phase can follow an attack whether or not the person vomited, and it does not mean the migraine is still at its peak. Activities may feel harder because the nervous system is settling after the episode.

Note how long recovery takes and whether symptoms are becoming more disruptive. A pattern of prolonged or repeated post-attack symptoms is worth discussing with a clinician.

Supporting recovery

Give yourself a gradual return to normal activity. Rest, drink fluids, eat simple regular meals, and limit bright screens if they aggravate symptoms. Avoid driving or hazardous work while dizzy, confused, or unable to concentrate. Follow your prescribed migraine plan and avoid adding repeated doses without advice. Sleep may help, but an excessively irregular sleep schedule can become a trigger for future attacks. Write down possible triggers and the point at which the recovery phase ends.

When lingering symptoms are not typical

Seek emergency care for a sudden severe headache, new weakness, numbness, speech trouble, confusion, seizure, fainting, or vision loss. Get urgent assessment for fever with severe neck stiffness, a headache after significant injury, or vomiting that prevents drinking. Arrange medical review if the recovery pattern is new, worsening, unusually long for you, or accompanied by a different kind of headache.

Questions for your doctor

Which lingering symptoms fit my migraine pattern? How should I pace work and exercise after an attack? Could my medicines, sleep, or hydration be affecting recovery? What change should prompt urgent help?
