What should you know about middle lobe pneumonia?

Pneumonia can cause cough, fever, chills, tiredness, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, and coughing up phlegm. Some people have fewer typical symptoms, especially older adults or those with other illnesses. A clinician may listen to the chest, check oxygen levels, and arrange imaging to confirm which part of the lung is affected. Causes include bacteria and viruses such as influenza or COVID-19; treatment depends on the cause and severity.

Follow the prescribed treatment exactly and complete any antibiotic course as directed. Rest, drink fluids if you can, avoid smoking, and use fever or pain medicine only when suitable for you. Keep track of breathing, temperature, alertness, and ability to drink. Arrange follow-up if symptoms do not begin to improve or return after initial improvement.

Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to keep fluids down, or rapidly worsening illness.
