Meniere's disease without vertigo

Meniere's disease affects hearing and balance systems in the inner ear, and symptoms do not always appear together. Someone may notice fluctuating hearing, ringing, or a blocked feeling in one ear between balance attacks, or may have a quiet period without spinning. The absence of vertigo at one visit does not confirm or exclude the condition.

Hearing loss and ringing also have many other possible explanations, including earwax, medication effects, noise exposure, infection, or other inner-ear conditions. The side affected, timing, and changes on testing help a clinician judge what needs investigation.

Record which ear is affected, whether hearing changes come and go, and any ringing, fullness, imbalance, or sound sensitivity. Arrange a GP assessment for new, persistent, or one-sided symptoms. A hearing test can document the pattern even when you are not dizzy. Protect your ears from loud noise and avoid driving if balance feels unreliable.

Sudden hearing loss needs urgent medical assessment, especially when it affects one ear. Seek emergency help for facial weakness, speech difficulty, new limb weakness, fainting, severe headache, or sudden severe imbalance. Prompt care is also appropriate if ringing follows a head injury or is accompanied by severe ear pain or discharge.

Ask whether your hearing pattern fits an inner-ear disorder, whether repeat testing is needed, and what changes should prompt faster review. Discuss noise exposure, medicines, and practical advice about work or driving.
