What should you know about melanoma spread to lymph nodes?

Lymph nodes are small immune-system structures that drain fluid from nearby tissues. Melanoma cells can travel from the original skin site to regional nodes. A confirmed node deposit changes the stage, but it does not by itself describe whether melanoma has reached distant organs. Doctors combine the pathology report, examination, and scans when deciding the extent of disease.

A lump in a lymph-node region can have many causes, including infection. Conversely, melanoma-related node involvement may be found through a biopsy even when a node is not obvious from the skin. The result should therefore be interpreted by the treating team rather than by touch alone.

Ask the melanoma team to explain which node is involved, how it was tested, and what the complete stage is. Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy may identify the first draining node in selected cases; a needle biopsy or another procedure may be used when a node is enlarged. Treatment can include removal of the original tumour, discussion of Tumour Removal Surgery, and medicines such as Immunotherapy, depending on the full assessment.

Tell your team promptly about a growing lump, persistent pain or swelling, unexplained weight change, night sweats, or new skin changes near the original melanoma. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, severe headache, confusion, weakness, or sudden neurological symptoms. These symptoms need rapid assessment and do not establish where melanoma has spread.
