What should you know about lump near neck and shoulder?

This area includes lymph nodes along the side of the neck, the lower neck near the collarbone, muscles, salivary tissue, and the thyroid region. A recent throat, ear, dental, or skin infection can make a nearby lymph node swell. A cyst, lipoma, irritated skin lesion, or muscle-related swelling can also form a palpable lump. Cancer is one possibility, including lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or head and neck cancer, but the position alone cannot distinguish these causes.
