What should you know about hard lump between neck and shoulder?

The neck and shoulder junction includes muscles, skin and fatty tissue, lymph nodes, nerves, and blood vessels. A lump may follow muscle strain, an inflamed skin cyst, infection, or another non-cancerous change. A firm lump in this region can be a presentation of head and neck cancer or lymphoma; thyroid cancer and cancer of unknown primary may also be considered according to the exact site and examination.

Describe whether the lump is on one side, whether it moves, and whether it hurts with shoulder or neck movement. Also mention changes in size, skin colour, arm symptoms, hoarseness, swallowing difficulty, fever, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.

Arrange an appointment rather than repeatedly pressing the area. Write down when it began, any injury or infection beforehand, and whether it has changed. The clinician may examine the neck, collarbone, shoulder, mouth, and throat, then choose imaging or tissue sampling based on the findings.

Bring a list of medicines and previous cancer or surgery history. If testing suggests a thyroid source, treatment discussions may include thyroid removal surgery, but that decision depends on the confirmed diagnosis and the wider plan.

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, inability to swallow, rapidly expanding swelling, severe pain with fever, new arm weakness, or fainting. Seek prompt review for a fixed lump that enlarges, does not settle, or occurs with persistent hoarseness, night sweats, or unexplained weight loss.

Ask which structures are near the lump, whether its movement or firmness changes the testing plan, whether imaging or a sample is needed, and when you should expect an explanation of the results.
