Light-sensitive, watery eyes: what to know

Light-sensitive watery eyes may result from surface irritation, conjunctivitis, migraine, or a more urgent eye or neurological problem. The combination can occur when the eye becomes inflamed or when bright light triggers discomfort and reflex tearing.

Wind, dust, dry air, contact lenses, or a small surface scratch can make the eye sting and water. Conjunctivitis may add redness, discharge, or crusting. Migraine can cause light sensitivity with headache, nausea, or visual symptoms, sometimes without much eye redness. A painful red eye or a sudden change in vision needs prompt assessment because the cause may be deeper than simple irritation.

Move into softer, indirect light and avoid rubbing the eyes. Remove contact lenses and use glasses until the eye feels normal. A cool clean compress may soothe the closed eyelids; preservative-free lubricating drops can help dryness. Do not share towels, eye makeup, or drops with others if redness or discharge suggests infection. Arrange an eye or medical review if symptoms persist, recur, or interfere with normal activities.

Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, marked redness, a sudden vision change, a new unequal pupil, injury, chemical exposure, or trouble opening the eye. Get emergency help when light sensitivity comes with a severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, fainting, weakness, or repeated vomiting. These warning signs can occur with conditions such as meningitis and should not be managed with home care alone.

Ask whether the pattern fits dry eye, conjunctivitis, migraine, a corneal problem, or medication irritation; whether contact lenses should be stopped; and which symptoms would require same-day review.
