What IL-2 is
IL-2 means interleukin-2, a messenger protein made by the immune system. As a treatment, it is intended to activate and expand selected immune cells so they can respond to cancer. It is different from conventional cytotoxic chemotherapy, although people may use the word chemotherapy broadly for cancer medicines.
IL-2 may be considered in specific situations and is not suitable for every cancer or every person. Preparing for treatment

IL-2 is often delivered in a hospital setting with repeated checks of blood pressure, heart rate, breathing, urine output, blood tests, and weight.
Possible effects include fever, chills, tiredness, nausea, diarrhoea, low blood pressure, swelling, and changes in kidney or liver function. The team may pause treatment or give supportive medicines when needed. Arrange help with transport and daily tasks, and keep written instructions for symptoms to report.
When to seek urgent care
During treatment, tell staff immediately about breathlessness, chest pain, faintness, confusion, a sudden reduction in urine, severe vomiting or diarrhoea, or a rapidly worsening rash. After leaving hospital, use the emergency route provided by your team for severe breathing difficulty, collapse, new confusion, or chest pain. Do not wait for the next appointment if symptoms are intense or rapidly changing.
