If ectopic pregnancy would test negative?

Pregnancy tests detect human chorionic gonadotropin, which rises after implantation. Testing very early, using dilute urine, or having an unclear timing of conception can affect a result. An ectopic pregnancy may produce hormone levels that rise more slowly, so a single negative urine test cannot explain severe or persistent pain.

Clinicians may combine repeat pregnancy testing with blood tests, examination, and a transvaginal ultrasound. Pelvic inflammatory disease and other conditions can also cause pelvic pain, so the diagnosis should be based on the whole clinical picture.

If pregnancy is possible and you have one-sided pelvic pain, bleeding, dizziness, or shoulder-tip pain, contact urgent medical services. Do not wait for a home test to become positive when symptoms are concerning. Take note of the first day of your last period, test dates, bleeding, pain location, and medicines. Further treatment depends on the findings and may include monitoring, medicine, or surgery.

Go to emergency care for sudden severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, marked weakness, heavy bleeding, or pain with dizziness. These symptoms can signal internal bleeding. Prompt assessment is also needed for worsening one-sided pain or pain during a possible early pregnancy, even if a home test is negative.
