Short answer

Wheezing is a whistling sound from narrowed airways; it can occur with asthma, infection, allergy, or chronic lung disease and may need prompt assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Sound
A high-pitched whistle from narrowed airways
Emergency clues
Severe breathlessness, blue lips, confusion, or throat swelling

What may be causing the sound

Air moving through narrowed or inflamed airways can create wheezing, often more clearly during breathing out. Asthma is a common condition associated with episodes triggered by exercise, cold air, allergens, or respiratory infections. Acute Bronchitis can also cause cough and temporary airway irritation.

Allergic Rhinitis may accompany airway symptoms, while Bronchiolitis mainly affects young children. COPD can cause persistent wheeze, cough, and breathlessness. Wheezing with sudden swelling, hives, vomiting, or throat tightness can be Anaphylaxis and is an emergency.

What to do now

Sit upright, loosen tight clothing, avoid smoke and strong scents, and try to stay calm. If a clinician has prescribed a reliever inhaler or an action plan, follow those instructions exactly; do not use another person’s medicine.

Arrange prompt assessment for new wheezing, wheezing after an infection, or symptoms that return at night or with activity. A clinician may listen to your chest and decide whether tests or Nebuliser Treatment are appropriate.

When breathing is an emergency

Call emergency services immediately for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, confusion, fainting, rapidly worsening symptoms, or swelling of the mouth or throat.

Seek same-day medical advice when wheezing is new, persistent, accompanied by chest pain or fever, or not improving with your prescribed plan. Children, older adults, and people with lung disease should be assessed promptly when breathing changes.

Questions for your doctor

When did the wheeze begin, and what triggers it? Could asthma, infection, allergy, or another airway problem explain it? What is my action plan, and when should I use urgent services?

Questions people ask

Does wheezing always mean asthma?

No. Infections, allergic reactions, chronic lung disease, and other airway problems can also cause wheezing, so a new sound should be assessed in context.

Can I wait for wheezing to stop?

Do not wait if breathing is difficult or worsening. Use your prescribed action plan and seek emergency help for severe symptoms.
