Hypothyroidism and light sensitivity: what to know

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, means that ordinary light feels uncomfortable or painful. It can occur with migraine, eye irritation or inflammation, contact-lens problems, and some medicines. An underactive thyroid may cause general symptoms such as fatigue, feeling cold, constipation, or a hoarse voice, but light sensitivity alone does not establish a thyroid problem.

Pay attention to whether one or both eyes are affected, whether the eye is red or painful, and whether symptoms come with headache, nausea, blurred vision, or discharge. Those details help a clinician decide whether an eye examination, migraine assessment, or another evaluation is appropriate.

Reduce glare, use comfortable indoor lighting, and wear ordinary sunglasses outdoors if they help; avoid staying in darkness for long periods because this can make normal light harder to tolerate. Rest your eyes during screen use, keep contact lenses out while the eye is irritated, and do not use leftover eye drops. Record triggers and associated symptoms, and arrange an assessment if the problem persists or returns.

Seek urgent care for light sensitivity with severe headache, fever, stiff neck, confusion, a new rash, or marked drowsiness. Immediate eye assessment is needed for sudden vision loss, severe eye pain, a very red eye, injury, or halos around lights with nausea. These warning signs can occur with conditions such as meningitis or serious eye problems and should not be attributed to hypothyroidism without examination.
