Hyperpigmentation around the eyes: what to know
Updated

Short answer
Hyperpigmentation around the eyes can reflect natural skin tone, sun exposure, rubbing, or irritation, but sudden one-sided change or eye symptoms needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why the eye area looks darker
Eyelid and under-eye skin is thin and easily irritated. Genetics, visible vessels, tear-trough shadows, sun exposure, allergies, eczema, rubbing, and contact reactions can all contribute to a darker appearance. Brown pigment on the skin is different from a change inside the eye. A clinician will consider colour, texture, symmetry, swelling, itch, and any new cosmetic or medicine exposure.
Care for this delicate area
Avoid rubbing, fragranced products, and applying facial acids or bleaching products close to the eyes. Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser suited to the eyelids, sunglasses, and sun protection that does not sting. If the skin is itchy or scaly, seek advice rather than repeatedly changing products. Selected Skin Brightening Treatment, Chemical Peel, IPL Photofacial, Picosecond Laser Treatment, or Hydroquinone Treatment may be discussed only when the clinician confirms a safe treatment zone.
When to seek care
Seek prompt medical help for sudden one-sided darkening with eye pain, vision change, marked swelling, redness, discharge, or injury. Arrange review for a changing spot, bleeding, ulceration, persistent rash, or pigment that follows a new medicine. Do not put non-eye products on the eyelid or in the eye unless specifically directed.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the colour is pigment, shadow, visible vessels, or dermatitis, and whether allergy or rubbing is contributing. Discuss safe distances from the lash line, product ingredients to avoid, and whether an eye specialist is needed.

Questions people ask
Can I use a normal dark-spot cream under my eyes?
Do not assume it is safe there; the eye area needs a product and treatment plan chosen for its thin, sensitive skin.
Does rubbing cause darker under-eye skin?
Repeated rubbing from itch, allergy, or irritation can contribute to post-inflammatory darkening.
