Hyperpigmentation around the eyes: what to know

Eyelid and under-eye skin is thin and easily irritated. Genetics, visible vessels, tear-trough shadows, sun exposure, allergies, eczema, rubbing, and contact reactions can all contribute to a darker appearance. Brown pigment on the skin is different from a change inside the eye. A clinician will consider colour, texture, symmetry, swelling, itch, and any new cosmetic or medicine exposure.

Avoid rubbing, fragranced products, and applying facial acids or bleaching products close to the eyes. Use a gentle cleanser, moisturiser suited to the eyelids, sunglasses, and sun protection that does not sting. If the skin is itchy or scaly, seek advice rather than repeatedly changing products. Seek prompt medical help for sudden one-sided darkening with eye pain, vision change, marked swelling, redness, discharge, or injury. Arrange review for a changing spot, bleeding, ulceration, persistent rash, or pigment that follows a new medicine. Do not put non-eye products on the eyelid or in the eye unless specifically directed.

Ask whether the colour is pigment, shadow, visible vessels, or dermatitis, and whether allergy or rubbing is contributing. Discuss safe distances from the lash line, product ingredients to avoid, and whether an eye specialist is needed.
