How is whiteheads treated?

A whitehead is a closed pore containing oil and dead skin cells. Whiteheads commonly occur with acne or comedonal acne, especially on the face, chest, or back. Small firm white bumps can instead be milia, which are different from blocked acne pores and need a different approach.

Wash gently and avoid scrubs, picking, and squeezing, which can irritate the follicle and leave marks. A clinician may suggest a topical retinoid to help normalize pore shedding; use it exactly as directed and introduce it gradually if advised. Non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen support the skin barrier. An acne extraction facial may remove selected lesions when performed hygienically, but it does not prevent new blockages. Improvement depends on regular use over time.

See a clinician if bumps are widespread, painful, scarring, persistent despite routine care, or uncertain in appearance. Ask before using a topical retinoid if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding, because treatment choices may need to change.
