How do topical retinoids work?

They help loosen the buildup of dead cells and sebum inside pores, so existing comedones can clear and new blockages become less likely. Some retinoids also influence inflammation and pigment changes after spots heal. Early dryness, peeling, or sensitivity can happen while skin adjusts.

Use a small amount on clean, fully dry skin as prescribed, often beginning gradually. Apply moisturiser to reduce dryness and use daily sun protection because treated skin may be more sensitive. Avoid combining several irritating exfoliants unless advised. Keep the medicine away from eyes, lips, and nostril creases.
