What should you know about hip MRI scan?

Short answer

A hip MRI scan creates detailed images of the hip and surrounding tissues without x-rays, helping clinicians investigate pain, injury, inflammation, or an abnormal area.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the scan can show

MRI can distinguish bone marrow, cartilage, tendons, muscles, nerves, and other soft tissues more clearly than many routine imaging tests. You lie on a moving table that passes into the MRI scanner. The machine makes loud knocking or tapping sounds, so hearing protection is provided. Staying still helps prevent blurred images.

Some examinations use contrast through a vein to make particular tissues easier to assess. The scan itself does not confirm cancer on its own. A radiologist interprets the images alongside your symptoms, examination, and other tests; a biopsy may be needed when tissue confirmation is required.

Preparing for a hip MRI

Tell the imaging team about a pacemaker, implanted device, metal fragments, previous surgery, kidney problems, allergies, or a possibility of pregnancy. Remove metal items and follow instructions about food, drink, or medicines. Mention if enclosed spaces make you anxious; the team can discuss practical support before the appointment.

During the scan, use the call button if you feel unwell or need to stop. After contrast, follow the service's advice and report a rash, breathing difficulty, or marked dizziness promptly.

When to seek care

Contact the referring team if hip pain, weakness, or loss of movement is worsening while you wait for imaging. Seek urgent help for a new inability to bear weight after an injury, a cold or pale leg, severe swelling, or new loss of bladder or bowel control. These warning signs require clinical assessment rather than waiting for a routine report.

Questions for your doctor

Ask what the scan is intended to investigate, whether contrast is planned, when the report will be reviewed, and what the next step would be for an unclear finding. Ask whether other imaging or a biopsy is likely to be considered.

Questions people ask

Is a hip MRI scan painful?

The scan is generally not painful, but you must remain still and may find the confined space or noise uncomfortable.

Does an MRI show whether an area is cancer?

It can reveal features that need further assessment, but imaging alone may not establish a cancer diagnosis.
