What should you know about high pitched wheezing sound?

Wheezing often becomes more noticeable when breathing out, although severe narrowing can make sounds present during both phases of breathing. Asthma, airway irritation after a viral illness, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and allergic reactions can all narrow the tubes carrying air to the lungs. In babies, bronchiolitis is another possible cause. Nasal congestion from allergic rhinitis can alter breathing sounds but does not explain every chest wheeze.

The sound alone cannot identify its cause. A clinician may ask when it began, whether it follows exercise or exposure to smoke, dust, or a known allergen, and whether you have cough, chest tightness, fever, or breathlessness.

Move away from smoke, strong scents, dust, or a suspected allergen and sit upright. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as your clinician instructed; do not borrow someone else’s medicine. Arrange a medical assessment for a new, recurring, or unexplained wheeze, even if it settles. A clinician may listen to your chest and check oxygen levels before deciding whether inhaled treatment, a nebuliser treatment, or another evaluation is appropriate.

Call emergency services immediately for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, faintness, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms. Sudden wheezing with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, or after a possible allergen, may signal anaphylaxis and is an emergency. Seek prompt care for wheezing with chest pain, high fever, or a child who is struggling to feed or breathe.

Ask what may be narrowing your airways, whether you need breathing tests, how to use your inhaler with correct technique, and which warning signs should prompt emergency help. Mention your medicines, allergies, smoking or vaping exposure, and the situations that bring on the sound.
