High light sensitivity

Light sensitivity, also called photophobia, can occur with [Migraine](/conditions/migraine/) and may come with head pain, nausea or visual changes. Eye surface irritation, inflammation or infection can cause redness, watering, discharge or pain; [Conjunctivitis](/conditions/conjunctivitis/) is one possible cause. A new severe symptom with fever, stiff neck, confusion or a strong headache can indicate [Meningitis](/conditions/meningitis/), which requires urgent assessment.

The symptom itself does not identify one cause. Note whether one or both eyes are affected, how quickly it began and whether contact lenses, injury, medicines or a headache are involved.

Reduce glare, use comfortable indoor lighting and wear ordinary sunglasses outdoors if they help, while avoiding prolonged darkness that makes normal light harder to tolerate. Rest, hydration and a quiet room may help when the symptom accompanies a familiar migraine pattern. Arrange an eye or medical assessment if it is new, persistent, worsening or interfering with daily activities.

Seek urgent help for sudden severe light sensitivity, severe eye pain, reduced vision, an injured eye, marked redness with vomiting, or light sensitivity with fever, stiff neck, confusion, rash or a sudden severe headache. Do not drive if vision is affected.

Ask whether the pattern fits an eye problem, migraine or another illness, whether your vision and eye surface need examination, and which warning signs should prompt emergency care. Mention contact-lens use, recent injury and all medicines.
