What should you know about hiding bald spots?

A bald patch is a visible symptom, not a diagnosis. Alopecia Areata can cause smooth, sharply defined areas of hair loss, while Scalp Ringworm may cause scaling, broken hairs, tenderness, or swollen areas. Hair may also thin from pulling, inflammation, scarring, or other conditions. A clinician may examine the scalp, nails, and nearby skin and ask when the patch began, whether it is expanding, and whether other family members have similar hair loss.

A change in parting, layered styling, a hat, scarf, hair fibres, or a partial hairpiece can reduce visibility for the day. Apply fibres only to clean, dry hair and remove them gently; stop if the scalp burns, flakes, or becomes sore. Avoid tight styles, frequent heat, and adhesives on inflamed skin. Do not share combs, brushes, towels, or headwear when infection is possible. Treatment depends on the cause; a Hair Transplant is not suitable for every pattern, particularly when active inflammation or progressive loss has not been assessed.

Book a scalp assessment for a new, enlarging, painful, itchy, scaly, or crusted patch, or when eyelashes, eyebrows, or nails change too. Prompt review is especially useful if several people at home have scalp symptoms, because contagious infection needs different care from autoimmune hair loss. Seek urgent help for rapidly worsening swelling, fever, or pus.
