Hepatitis antigen test: what it checks

Antigens are substances associated with a virus. A reactive result may indicate viral material is present, while a non-reactive result may mean it was not detected in that sample. It does not by itself describe how severe an illness is or whether symptoms came from hepatitis.

The right interpretation depends on which hepatitis virus and antigen were tested, when exposure may have occurred, and whether other markers are positive. Hepatitis A may be associated with nausea, reduced appetite, feeling generally unwell, or dark urine, but symptoms vary and can have other causes.

Ask the ordering clinician to explain the exact antigen name and what additional markers are needed. They may arrange a Liver Function Test, repeat the sample, or assess contacts and recent food, travel, or exposure history. Keep the report rather than relying on a summary from a booking message. Follow hygiene advice and do not share items that may have blood on them until you have tailored guidance.

Contact a clinician promptly if you develop yellow eyes or skin, dark urine with marked illness, persistent vomiting, significant abdominal pain, confusion, or pronounced sleepiness. Urgent assessment is appropriate if you are faint, dehydrated, or unable to drink. A test result should be discussed even when symptoms are mild.
