What should you know about hepatitis A viral load?

Viral load is a laboratory concept: it estimates how much virus is present in a particular specimen at the time it is collected. A result can depend on the sample, timing, and test method, so it does not by itself describe how ill someone feels or predict the course of illness. Hepatitis A is an infection of the liver and is commonly assessed through the overall clinical picture, antibody testing, and liver blood tests.

People with hepatitis A may feel generally unwell, lose their appetite, feel nauseated, or notice dark urine. These symptoms can have other causes, so a symptom alone does not establish hepatitis A.

Share the complete laboratory report with a clinician, including the test name, specimen type, collection date, and whether the result was detected or not detected. Ask how the finding fits with antibody results and a liver function test. Rest, drink fluids as tolerated, and avoid alcohol while your clinician is assessing liver inflammation. Do not start or stop medicines, including non-prescription products, without checking whether they are suitable for your liver.

Because hepatitis A can spread through close contact and contaminated food or water, ask promptly about household precautions and hepatitis A vaccination when exposure is possible.

Arrange medical review promptly if you have jaundice, dark urine with worsening illness, persistent vomiting, marked drowsiness, confusion, severe abdominal pain, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek urgent help for confusion, fainting, or signs of severe dehydration. Contact a clinician after a known exposure even if you feel well, because prevention and testing decisions depend on timing.
