What should you know about hepatitis A urine color?

When the liver is inflamed, bile-related pigments can build up in the blood and pass into urine, making it look darker than usual. Dehydration, some foods, medicines, and urinary conditions can also change urine colour. Hepatitis A may present with dark urine alongside feeling generally unwell, nausea, reduced appetite, pale stools, or yellowing of the skin and eyes. A symptom is not a diagnosis.

Notice whether the change persists and whether you are drinking normally. Tell a clinician about the shade, onset, recent travel, food or water exposures, alcohol, medicines, and other symptoms. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. Assessment may include a physical examination, urine testing, and a liver function test.

Arrange prompt medical advice for persistent dark urine, yellow eyes or skin, severe vomiting, increasing abdominal pain, confusion, or difficulty keeping fluids down. Seek urgent help if you become very drowsy or suddenly much worse. These warning signs need assessment regardless of the eventual cause.
